RRYC Vessel Safety Check

Who: Anyone who owns or operates a sail or powerboat.

 

What/Why: The U.S. Sail and Power Squadron is offering voluntary vessel safety inspections.  Let’s all make sure we are safety conscious and in compliance with all regulations.  Upon passing the inspection you will receive a Vessel Safety Check sticker for display on your boat.   I have provided a copy of the VSC Checklist below to help owners prepare for the safety check.

 

When/Where:

0930-1330   Vessel Inspections and Safety Equipment Demonstration – Rappahannock River Yacht Club. (Space on the T-Dock based on VSC schedule)

 

Registration: Please register online at (RRYC Website) by May 15st to schedule your Vessel Safety Check.

VESSEL SAFETY CHECKLIST

 

Required

Display of Numbers

Plain Block Letters 3” high

Spaces need to be the width of a letter or separated by a hyphen (EX: VA 1234 AB)

Color contrasts with the color of the hull

Registration or Documentation

Current registration for Virginia

Out of state good for 30 days from date of beginning use in Virginia OR

USCG Documentation, number permanently affixed to hull

Personal Flotation Devices

PFD per person

Vessels over 16’ required to have 1 throwable

Visual Distress Signals

Vessels over 16’ required to have 3 day/night flares

(unexpired), or an electronic flare plus a daytime distress flag.

Vessels under 16’ required only if used at night

Fire Extinguisher

Number and type required, not older than 12 years, gauge in green.

Backfire Flame Control

Gas powered inboard engines Must be clean.

Sound Producing Device

Either installed horn or canned air horn

Navigation Lights

Forward facing Red/Green

White light (Anchor light, stern light steaming light as required)

Pollution Placard

Vessels 26 feet and over

Marpol Trash Placard

Vessels 26 feet and over

Vessels over 40 feet written trash plan required

Marine Sanitation Device

Must have lock out valve to prevent accidental discharge overboard

Navigation Rules

Vessels over 40 feet required to have copy of Federal Navigation Rules onboard

 

Recommended

Marine Radio

Handheld range about 1 mile; Mounted 10+ mile range, digital distress signal, weather

Dewatering device and back up

Working bilge pump plus a bucket

Mounted fire extinguishers

Recommended to be mounted; don’t become a hazard, always know where to find them

Anchor and line for area

May need to use anchor if power is lost until help arrives

First Aid kit

With supplies appropriate for use

Capacity Plate

Maximum number of passengers/weight/ horsepower allowed
